Dan Murphy Sculptor Biography

Dan started working with metal in the late 1980’s. His skills at manipulating his materials (mainly corrugated iron and fencing wire) increased rapidly in the early 90’s as interest in his work and his confidence in his creative ability increased. He is a self-taught artist whose visual repertoire ranges from small figures to major public sculptural installations.

Dan has been living and working in Alice Springs and Central Australia since 1994, during which time he has created a reputation as an innovative and important sculptor nationally.

His works, constructed from found metallic materials including fencing wire, roofing iron and old car panels have a distinctive Territory feel. He has participated in a number of community arts projects in remote communities and in Alice Springs. These include facilitating small scale bush toys in Santa Teresa as part of the Fencing Shed Project and constructing a monumental 18 metre long metal caterpillar at the Alice Springs Cultural Precinct.

Dan has been an active in a number of roles within the Northern Territory Arts community. Dan has been the Chairperson of the Watch This Space Artist Run Initiative since 2005, a member of the Northern Territory Arts Grants Board, a Board Member at RedHOTArts Central Australia, and curator of Imagine Alice and facilitator of sacred sites tours with the Mbantua custodians for the 2009 ‘Art at the Heart’ National Community Arts Conference, held in Alice Springs. He is currently coordinating a Public Art project for the Alice Springs Town Pool.

His current exhibition comes after a pause in his production of works in which he has taken time out to care for his daughter (turning 4 in April) Mocuisle who has been the muse for his current series of works falling under the Exhibition title of Blue Moon.

Hungry Bird Moon is taken from a picture drawn by Mocuisle in response to Dan’s telling of a rabbit in the moon story as the two were gazing at the moon one evening. She thought it more like a Hungry Bird Moon and drew it for him. This prompted Dan to make Hungry Moon and the whole series of Moons followed.

These works are smaller pieces for Dan, scaled to accommodate the time constraints that he has as a hands on parent. The title Blue Moon comes from his realization that in his new circumstances, he would be able to exhibit once in a blue moon. And when was the next Blue Moon? March 30 2010.
